Stop Saying 'Me Gusta' Wrong: Say This Instead
In 30 seconds

Me caes bien = I like you (as a person). Me gustas = I'm attracted to you. Te quiero = I love you (friends, family, partners). Use the right one or send the wrong signal.

The mistake: saying me gustas to a new friend tells them you fancy them. Say me caes bien instead.

The phrases (copy-paste ready)

Me gusta el café. — I like coffee. (a thing takes gusta, not gustas)

Me caes bien. — I like you. (friendship, good vibes)

Me caes muy bien. — I really like you. (still platonic)

Me gustas. — I’m attracted to you. / I fancy you.

Me gustas mucho. — I really like you. (romantic)

Me encantas. — I’m crazy about you.

Te quiero. — I love you. (partners, family, close friends)

Te quiero mucho. — I love you so much.

Te amo. — I love you. (deep romantic love, varies by region)

¿Te gusto? — Do you like me? (asking about attraction)

¿Te caigo bien? — Do you like me? (as a person)

Eres muy simpático/a. — You’re really nice.

Me haces feliz. — You make me happy.

Me importas. — I care about you.

Te echo de menos. — I miss you. (Spain; in Latin America: Te extraño.)

Quiero estar contigo. — I want to be with you.

Eres especial para mí. — You’re special to me.

Me caes genial. — I think you’re great. (casual, friendly)

Quick notes

The lines above use tú, the usual form with peers in casual conversation. With usted, the verb takes the third person: Usted me cae muy bien (I like you).

Te quiero vs te amo: In Spain, te quiero is common between partners, family, and close friends. Te amo is reserved for intense romantic love. In parts of Latin America, te amo is more freely used between couples. When in doubt, te quiero is safe.

Me gustas literally means “you are pleasing to me” — the same gustar structure used for things (me gusta el café), but applied to a person. If you know the line and still freeze when you have to say it, that is the gap we cover in why you freeze speaking Spanish.

Frequently asked questions

Is me gustas too forward?

It clearly signals attraction. If you mean friendship, say me caes bien. If you are flirting, me gustas is direct and still appropriate.

Can I say te amo to family?

In parts of Latin America, yes. In Spain, te quiero is the usual choice for family. Listen to how people around you say it before you use te amo.
